No visit to Central Vermont is complete without a tour of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory in Waterbury Center. This famous company has become an icon for Vermont the world over. The company was started by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1978 and moved to its current location in 1986. Their fun range of flavors, which is added to a continuous basis, results in smiles from every customer. Who can resist trying out a cone of Cherry Garcia or The Full Vermonty? Ben and Jerry's is also known for their leading environmental and social policies.
The factory offers tours daily except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. From late October till the end of May tours start at 10:00 AM and during the rest of the year they start at 9:00 AM. On weekdays you will see Ice Cream actually being made, but the tour is fun at all times and always includes a generous sample!
To get there from the Mad River Valley head north up Route 100 and keep on 100 at the 100/100B intersection 5 miles north of Waitsfield. Join Highway 2 west and go through Waterbury (being careful to observe the 25 mph speed limit) then turn north again on Route 100 towards Stowe. Ben & Jerry's is on the left about a mile north of I-89. Driving time is about 25 minutes.
