What’s Disc Golf? It’s a sport in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. Disc golf is similar to traditional golf and uses many of the same rules and same terminology. Unlike ball golf, most courses are located in public parks and are usually free to play. The modern disc golf target consists of a metal basket with chains hanging over it and was invented in 1976. The flying discs used in play are very similar to the Frisbee. However, the golf discs used today are much smaller than traditional Frisbees. Also, Frisbees have a rounded, flatter edge whereas golf discs typically have a beveled edge. A golf disc has the potential to be thrown much farther than a typical, rounded Frisbee and is not designed to be catchable.
