Dog Friendly Lodging in the MRV
Finding just the right lodging accommodations can often times be challenging and if you have a pooch in tow it makes it doubly hard. That being said the MRV is an incredibly dog-loving community and there are a variety of options for you and your four-legged, best friend.
Here are a few suggestions along with some of their policies;
1824 House – 2 rooms are dog friendly, Caldonia and Franklin. Dog Policies:
There is a dog fee of $35/night.
- Pet owners agree to keep their dog “under control” while the pet is in any public place on the grounds.
- Pet owners agree to not leave their pet unattended for extended periods of time.
- Pet owners agree to keep their pet off all furniture. Pet owners agree to clean up after their dog.
- Pet towels are available from the staff for drying of pets. Do not use bath towels.
- Pet owners should remove their pet from the room during housekeeping service or opt not to receive housekeeping services. (Specific time to be scheduled @ check in). If a pet becomes aggressive to any staff, guest or other animal at 1824 House, the pet owner must promptly remove the pet from the property, unless other arrangements are made with management.
- Pet owners accept full responsibility for any and all liability, claims, losses, costs and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) for personal injury or property damage caused by pet and agrees to make reimbursement for such damages on demand.
- Pet owners agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend 1824 House Inn and Barn, its owners and employees from any and all liability, claims, losses, costs and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or relating to any claim for personal injury or property damage caused by pet.
Clay Brook at Sugarbush Resort-They have dog friendly units, but must make accommodations in advance.
Hyde Away Inn –Several dog friendly rooms.
Inn at Lareau Farm– Dog Friendly rooms: (Patience, Kindness, Gratefulness and Compassion) all have outside door entrances. All other guest rooms are off limits as other guests may have allergies. Pets are not allowed in the inn common areas at any time.
Policy “We do have plenty of room to romp and play, but please be sure to clean up after your pet. We request that you use a leash when on property around all the high traffic lawn areas, safety for you and our other guests are paramount. There is a dumpster at the north end of the barn, if needed. We are on the banks of the Mad River, so water play is available, too.
Be aware there might be humans in the main building who are not pet friendly, so ask before entering to pass through those areas. We want everyone to have a good time while visiting us. And one more pesky rule: no sleeping on the beds. Barking, whining, etc. and we will ask that you remove your pet from the room.
There is no pet deposit but a charge will be added to your invoice upon check out ($50 minimum) if there is evidence of any destruction to the room.

- pet must be licensed and up to date on shots
- pet must be quiet and not disturb other guests. Do not bring barking dogs.
- pet could come with a kennel/pet carrier (not mandatory)
- pet must be very well house-trained so as not to soil the rooms in any way
- the pet must be supervised at all times and cannot be left alone in the guest room. During breakfast, we suggest putting the animal in your car for this short period.
- the pet should be either on a leash or carried when walking through the common areas of the Inn
- the owner agrees to compensate any damage, cleaning, injury, or loss to the Inn caused by the pet
- Should another guest complain about your dog, you
- may be liable for addressing their complaint.
- no pets sleeping on our beds
- scoop up pet poop from our grounds and deposit in the outside dumpster
- limit one pet per room
- You agree to allow us to charge your credit card for any costs associated with these pet rules.
- Also, a dog named “Teddy” lives here at the Inn with us.
Wilder Farm – Dog friendly with a whole house rental.
As noted earlier, the Mad River Valley is an incredibly dog-friendly place and many of our local dog owners don’t just love their animals, they work hard to help other.
PAWSitive Pantry was started right here in town. It’s a non-profit founded in 2009 to provide a safety net to help pets whose families have fallen on hard times. Through a liaison with the Vermont Foodbank they deliver dog and cat food to food shelves throughout the state of Vermont. To date over 350,000 lbs of food have been distributed.
Another great local organization with MRV roots is Therapy Dogs of Vermont. Brian Carten, a long-time MRV resident is a very active board member for this amazing organization that has been touching hearts, bringing joy, offering comfort, and enriching lives with certified therapy dog teams in Vermont and beyond.
