Out of Sight, Out of Murder was the first play to receive the Valley Players’ Vermont Playwright Award in 1983. In the play, author Peter Knight (Jesse Putnam, Warren) is grinding out a murder story in an old mansion in Vermont where another author was murdered years before. A weird electrical storm effects a cosmic snafu and his characters come to life. There’s the lovely ingenue (Aimee Clement, Waitsfield), the trusty butler (Brent Adams, Warren), a feisty character woman (Ruth Ann Pattee, Fayston), a dauntless hero (Louis Bronson, Warren), a fascinating “other woman” (Rachel Natvig, Northfield), the always pregnant serving girl (Marci Robinson, Warren), and the wily lawyer (Sal Spinosa, Waitsfield) waiting for midnight to read the will. Peter loses control of his characters and there is a murder; the intended victim is Peter. Other murders follow and the culprit is among characters who, having also worked for other authors, know a great deal about the subject. Charlotte Robinson, Warren, is also in the cast. The play is directed by Doug Bergstein, Warren, and stage managed by Mikki Nucci, Waitsfield. Jasper Mayone, Waitsfield, is the light operator.
