Virtual Mad Marathon
July 12, 2020 @ 7:00 am - 10:00 am
This weekend would have been the 10thAnnual Mad Marathon, Mad Half and Relays, but, as previously announced, the event has been postponed until next year. Of course this means that the Valley will not be inundated with our colorful runners, their families and supporters. Sadly an estimated loss of well over a million dollars to the community!
Saying that the Mad Marathon has offered all those entered and others an opportunity to compete in one of three virtual events. There will be two typical virtual runs in the Mad Marathon and the Mad Half and then one unique Mad Marathon Three Hour Challenge. The whole course has been filmed and a three hour video has been produced which will be broadcasted on our local MRV TV channel and also published on YouTube. The TV broadcast will begin at 7AM on Sunday July 12 which is the traditional start time of the event. The video includes many features with runners, sponsors and local personalities who have submitted short clips talking about the Valley, their involvement and running experiences.
You may be wondering why a three hour challenge? Marathon running has become more of a social event rather than being competitive for the vast majority of entrants. Three hours, or a 6 minute 50 second per mile pace for the 26.2 mile distance, was always a goal for the good club runner. We are offering every runner the opportunity to follow this pace and see what it takes to run a marathon in three hours. Of course most will not complete the distance in this time but they will let us know how far they actually ran in the three hour period. We will then post the results and award prizes accordingly. Those who run the two traditional virtual runs will also submit their recorded times and these will also be posted in the official results.
We do know that some competitors will actually run the Mad Marathon and Mad Half routes this weekend so if you see them please give them a cheer and some encouragement. Check the MRVTV schedule for actual broadcast times. The YouTube video link will be posted on our Facebook page and on our website madmarathon.com where you can also find full details of our virtual runs.
