A 6.2 mile round-trip hike through forest across the top of Mad River Glen to the summit of General Stark Mountain. Begin at the Appalachian Gap and hike south. Your first challenge is Stark’s Wall, a steep uphill climb. You will cross a perennially muddy area with the help of planks, climb a ladder across the rocks, then begin to get views as you approach the top of the double chair at Mad River Glen. Continue on the Long Trail past Stark’s Nest warming shelter and take advantage of the frequent lookouts as you approach General Stark Mountain. Return the same way. Hiking time approximately 4 – 5 hours round-trip.
From Route 100, takeRoute 17 west to the top of the Appalachian Gap and park in the parking area on the right.
As in all mountain hiking, be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring lots of water, and be prepared for changeable weather. Detailed hiking maps are available in 50 Hikes in Vermont by the Green Mountain Club and the Guide Book of the Long Trail also by the Green Mountain Club.
