Camel’s Hump from Huntington
A lesser-used 5.6 mile round-trip loop trail to the summit of Camel’s Hump approaches the mountain from the west. The Forest City Trail begins at a road junction east of Huntington Center. Going right from the junction, the trail is a logging road that crosses and then re-crosses Brush Brook before climbing gradually to the Long Trail, 200 feet north of Mountclair Glen Lodge. Take the Long Trail to the left (north) and it is 1.9 miles to the summit. To make the loop, descend on the Burrows Trail back to the junction with the Forest City Trail. There are several brook crossings along the way to keep up your interest!
As in all mountain hiking, be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring lots of water, and be prepared for changeable weather. Detailed hiking maps are available in 50 Hikes in Vermont by the Green Mountain Club and the Guide Book of the Long Trail also by the Green Mountain Club.
From the Valley, take Route 17 west over the Appalachian Gap and make your first right when you’ve come down the hill onto Gore Road, which turns into Main Road, toward Huntington. In Huntington Center, follow the sign to Camel’s Hump Road and turn right. Take that to the end.
