Long Trail: Stark Mountain and Mount Ellen

A 9.3 mile out and back hike through forest across the top of Mad River Glen to the summit of General Stark Mountain and then on to the summit of Mount Ellen. Begin at the Appalachian Gap and hike the Long Trail south. Your first challenge is Stark’s Wall, a steep uphill climb. You will cross a perennially muddy area with the help of planks, climb a ladder across the rocks, then begin to get views as you approach the top of the double chair at Mad River Glen. Continue on the Long Trail past Stark’s Nest warming shelter and take advantage of the frequent lookouts as you approach General Stark Mountain. Keep going south on the Long Trail. There is a saddle in between the two peaks where you will pass the intersection with the Jerusalem Trail. From the summit of Mount Ellen return the same way.

To find the trail head head to the top of the Appalachian Gap. From Route 100, take Route 17 west to the top of the gap and park in the parking area on the right.

As in all mountain hiking, be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring lots of water, and be prepared for changeable weather. Detailed hiking maps are available in 50 Hikes in Vermont and the Guide Book of the Long Trail published by the Green Mountain Club
