Vermont State House
In Montpelier you can explore one of the nation’s oldest and best preserved state capitols. As you tour our halls and chambers, you will develop a sense of what makes this historic building, and the state for which it was built, unique.
The Vermont capitol also operates on the principle of open government and all rooms are, at least in theory, open to visitors at all times when the building is open to allow citizens to observe the work of government.
After 140 years, the Vermont State House still commands the landscape of Montpelier, the smallest capital city in America. The House and Senate chambers are the oldest legislative chambers in their original condition anywhere in the country.
Guided Tours are available on the half-hour, free of charge, July through mid-October: Monday-Friday.
Open Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM year-round except state holidays.
From the Mad River Valley head north on Route 100 then continue on 100B at the 100/100B intersection about 5 miles north of Waitsfield. At Middlesex join Highway 2 east towards Montpelier. About 6 miles later you will be driving right past the capitol. You can park at the meters in front of the building or if they are full there is a pay&display parking area just a little further along on your right. Driving time of about 30 minutes.
